While many see this step as global recognition, others fear that surfing is losing its essence under the pressure of commercialization<\/strong> and media spectacle. At Coconut Surf Experience<\/strong>, we believe that authentic surfing should not be sacrificed on the altar of marketing, and we want to talk about how this distortion does not represent us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surfing as a Commercial Product: The Viral Image of Gabriel Medina<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The clearest example of this transformation is the viral image of Gabriel Medina<\/strong> at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This photograph, widely circulated in the media and on social networks, captures Medina exiting a wave, putting on a show. But behind this image lies a reality that few take the time to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Medina, one of the world\u2019s most well-known and talented surfers, did not win the gold medal. However, the photograph has been used as a marketing tool to promote his image and attract sponsors. What should be a celebration of surfing as a pure connection with the ocean has turned into a packaged product designed for mass consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This type of commercialization distorts what surfing really means. Instead of reflecting the authentic experience of being in harmony with nature, it presents a stylized and artificial version that strays from the roots of the sport and its lifestyle. In our view, this trend reduces surfing to a series of photogenic moments, designed to capture attention and maximize visibility, but losing the true meaning of what it means to be a surfer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Coconut Surf Experience<\/strong>, we do not identify with this version of surfing. For us, surfing is not a spectacle; it is a way of life, a way to connect with nature, and to find balance and peace in the ocean. Surfing, in its most authentic form, is not about accumulating followers on social media. It’s about feeling the waves, respecting the sea, and living a genuine and personal experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Consequences of the Olympic Games: Tahiti and Japan as Examples<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The case of Gabriel Medina\u2019s image is just one example of a broader problem. In places like Tahiti<\/strong> and Japan<\/strong>, preparations for the Olympic Games have had significant consequences for local communities and the environment. In Tahiti, the construction of a new judges’ tower in Teahupo’o led to the destruction of a valuable coral reef, despite an adequate tower already existing in Papara. These kinds of decisions, driven by the need to meet Olympic standards, show a lack of respect for local ecosystems and the residents’ ways of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Japan, the rapid construction of infrastructure for the Tokyo 2020 Games in Tsurigasaki altered the natural landscape and affected the economic dynamics of the local community. Beaches that were once accessible to all became restricted spaces, and temporary infrastructure has left a legacy of underused structures that do not benefit the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These examples illustrate how commercialization and the Olympic spectacle can negatively impact both the environment and the people living in the affected areas. What should be a celebration of sport becomes a source of discontent and destruction, pulling surfing away from its fundamental values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
