The Consequences of the Olympic Games: Tahiti and Japan as Examples

In Tahiti, the construction of a new judges’ tower in Teahupo’o led to the destruction of a valuable coral reef, despite an adequate tower already existing in Papara. These kinds of decisions, driven by the need to meet Olympic standards, show a lack of respect for local ecosystems and the residents’ ways of life.
In Japan, the rapid construction of infrastructure for the Tokyo 2020 Games in Tsurigasaki altered the natural landscape and affected the economic dynamics of the local community. Beaches that were once accessible to all became restricted spaces, and temporary infrastructure has left a legacy of underused structures that do not benefit the community.
These examples illustrate how commercialization and the Olympic spectacle can negatively impact both the environment and the people living in the affected areas. What should be a celebration of sport becomes a source of discontent and destruction, pulling surfing away from its fundamental values.
